![]() ![]() ![]() There are moments throughout his movie that are extraordinary, but then there are other moments that don’t work. I think when he’s at his best he’s the best. I liked, and wanted to love, Branagh’s take. I liked the staging of that production as well. I also love David Tennant’s take on him, he’s got a much more solid command of the language than Gibson, and also plays simmering anger very well. He said himself that he doesn’t think he really captured the character and doesn’t think you can without doing it night after night on stage, but he’s my favorite screen Hamlet. He really captured the wild eyed anger of the character (from what we later learned, not a huge stretch for him as an actor, but still) and I wish he’d been given the opportunity to do the full text. Hot take: Mel Gibson is the best Hamlet I’ve seen on screen.
